Convention to enter into Force

Entry into Force:
The Conditions contained in Article 38 Paragraph 1 have been met. Hence, the Convention entered into Force on Friday the 24th of August 2012.

Chilean Ratification

Russian Federation Approval

On 17 May 2012, the Russian Federation deposited an Instrument of Approval with the Depositary.

European Union Approval

On 18 October 2011, the European Union deposited an instrument of Approval with the Depositary.

Australian BFIA

Australia has undertaken a Bottom Fishing Impact Assessment to determine whether bottom fishing activiities would have a significant adverse impact on vulnerable marine ecosystems. The assessment will be available for public comment. for 30 days from 24 August 2011.

The Russian Federation and the Republic of Cuba Sign Convention at Cali Meeting

The Russian Federation and the Republic of Cuba signed the Convention on the Conservation and Management of High Seas Fishery Resources in the South Pacific Ocean (the Convention) on 25 and 27 January 2011 respectively, during the Second Session of the Preparatory Conference for the Commission of the SPRFMO in Cali, Colombia.

Status of Convention

On 21 July 2010, the Kingdom of Denmark in respect of the Faroe Islands deposited an instrument of approval with the Depositary. The session concluded on 23 July 2010. The European Union signed the Convention on 26 July 2010 and China signed on 19 August 2010.

First session of the Preparatory Conference

The first session of the Preparatory Conference for the establishment of the Commission of the South Pacific Regional Fisheries Management Organisation will be held in Auckland, New Zealand from 19 to 23 July 2010.

Signature of Convention

New Zealand signed the Convention on 1 February 2010, followed shortly by the Cook Islands who signed on 3 February 2010. Chile signed on 23 February 2010, Colombia on 16 March 2010 and Peru on 20 April 2010.

Adoption of the SPRFMO Convention Text

On Saturday the 14 November 2009, the negotiations on the South Pacific Regional Fisheries Management Organisation were concluded. The convention was adopted unanimously.

Eighth International Meeting

The Eighth International Meeting to discuss the establishment of the proposed South Pacific Regional Fisheries Management Organisation will be held in Auckland, New Zealand, from 8 to 14 November 2009, with the DIWG and SWG meetings to be held the week prior (2 to 6 November 2009).

Website Upgrade

We have just upgraded our website for the Consultations on the Establishment of the proposed South Pacific Regional Fisheries Management Organization. The site has been upgraded to ensure that it remains fully supported and secure.

The new website should contain all the same information as the previous version, where this is still current. However, any links to the old version of the web site in external documents will no longer work.

Please advise the Interim Secretariat if you experience problems with the upgraded site.

Interim Secretariat Executive Secretary announced

On 28 August 2007, the Chair of the Consultations announced the appointment of the Executive Secretary of the SPRFMO Interim Secretariat, Dr Robin Allen. The appointment was made according to agreed procedures which all participants were invited to be involved in, and overseen by the Chair of the Consultations. Dr Allen will commence as Executive Secretary based in Wellington, New Zealand in late October.

Interim Secretariat Executive Secretary recruitment

Participants at the Third International Consultation on the Establishment of the South Pacific RFMO in Re aca, Chile agreed that pending the establishment of a Secretariat under the Agreement, an Interim Secretariat will be established and hosted by New Zealand. Annex G of the Re aca Meeting Report provides further detail. It is expected the Interim Secretariat will have an initial staff of three. An Interim Secretariat is expected to be operating by September 2007.

Third International Meeting

The third international meeting on the establishment of the South Pacific Regional Fisheries Management Organisation took place in Renaca, Chile from 30 April - 4 May 2007.

Chair's second draft text distributed

On 9 March 2007 the Chair of the international negotiations distributed a covering letter, a revised draft Agreement text and a reference contents page to participants for consideration at the Re aca meeting.
